David G. replied:
LOL. I fired my dentist recently. He built a new building to house his practice and I apparently was needed to make the mortgage payment (if he didn't pay cash). I will take care of the flossing and brushing. Semi-annual cleanings were the services for which I was willing to pay. He also lost my wife and 4 kids accounts as well when my wife called regarding an emergency for our daughter and the Admin explained that we didn't typically request the extra services and therefore was not the type of patient available to receive an emergency response. Understood and responded appropriately.

Jessica, many dentist "take" Delta Dental. The question you need to ask is "Are you a Delta Dental provider?" If you work for PISD, you need later hours...PM me if you'd like more info...

They do cost alot but are well worth it. My implant alone was $3500. I have the medical credit card and paid over 18 months no interest. Recommend Dr. F. Hinze at lone Star perio. Or Dr. D. Holtzclaw at Austin dental implant center.
Pambella P. replied:
I haven't had implants, but have had a fair amount of work done at Bright Smiles Family Dentistry; and I think they are amazing!!
Aida O. replied:
The only place you'll find good low-cost implant and all other dental care is at the school of dentistry at UT Health in San Antonio. It's a drive and you'll have to make several appointments and take time off to get it done. They charge a third or less of what an Austin area dentist charges and they will take insurance for what is covered. I had lots of work done there when I didn't have dental coverage or $$. My current dentist said the root canals I had were very good. The implant I got has been going strong for over 12 years. I took my son for extensive work at their peds clinic, too. Wish we had a dental school here. It's a great option.
Annie L. replied:
When my husband need implant, crown, root canal, and bridge. Carus quoted us almost $10,000. We have no insurance. After spending over $1000 at Carus Dental and 3 trips to take care possible infections before the root canal procedure. They can't even do it right, argue with them since the infection got worse. They refunded $600 and kept rest for "dentist's time". We went for second opinion, Pflugerville Modern Dentistry. They did everything in I think either 2 or 3 visits for little over $4000. We saved almost half of the price Carus quoted.
Vivian W. replied:
That sounds about right for dental implants and most dental insurance plans don't cover implants. I've been to a couple of dentists, including Pflugerville Modern Dentistry, and they have suggested dental implants. I always ask about alternative dental procedures because I can't afford that. Ask them because there may be a more affordable and efficient option.

Christa N. replied:
Do not go there. We are still undoing the damage from the terrible.crowns they gave me and my husband a couple of years ago . In fact my husband lost the entire tooth because they made the post too big and the crown fitted poorly and it decayed underneath. Anyway long story short we have had terrible experiences with Pflugerville Modern Dentistry.
Ashley I. replied:
I go to Carus Dental in hutto. They have a plan where you pay $5 per month for discounts on dental work. They'll show you the options of that plan vs your insurance and go with whatever is cheaper.

Helen M. replied:
That's roughly $2500 for the implant and $1000 for the crown. A lot of money, but I don't think it's way off. Do you have insurance? If so maybe try to get the implant this year and the crown next so it doesn't go over your yearly cap. If no insurance, maybe ask dentist for break or at least payment plan. I'd ask around though. Also depends on what kind of implant -- does that include extraction? Do they have to do a sinus lift? Any other issues. I had one done about 10 years ago. Dr. Ferguson (on Medical Pkway) did the extraction and implant work. He did a fabulous job -- considering he didn't want to damage the bone, he was extremely careful when pulling the took. There was almost 0 swelling or bleeding. Dr. Robicheaux did the crown. He recommended Dr. Ferguson if I was doing the implant and a different doctor to pull the tooth if I was doing a bridge. That doctor (Wiel) did implants too, but would have done it differently. At the time, I told Dr. Wiel that I planned to live to 100, so I needed it to last 60 years! He said bridges only last 10-15 years, but the implants forever.
My family is in need of a local dentist. Where do you recommend?

I avoided Castle Dental. My mom went for a check up and they told her they had to remove ALL her teeth, because 1 tooth was weak. They told her there was no point in just removing 1 tooth, because in a couple of years she was going to lose all. So what's the point of "fixing" one when all of them can be "fixed" at once (and by fixed I mean removed). Thankfully we found an amazing dentist that told her her tooth could be saved and all she needed was a more frequent deep cleaning and braces. Castle Dental was about to make my mom pay 10K to remove her teeth and get dentures.

Unfortunately most DMOs require you to go to clinic type places like Castle Dental. I worked in the field long ago and I have heard so many bad stories, I would never go there. If you can choose an indemnity plan that will let you choose your own dentist, that is the way to go. It's more expensive insurance and the co pays are more, but it's worth it to me. You only get one set of teeth!
