Here is the link the the AZ cooperative extension website that has tons of gardening information for vegetable gardens and fruit trees as well as a gardening calendar, watering instructions, monthly do's and don't, and pretty much all the info and resources needed to successfully grow in the Phx desert. Another extremely helpful resource is Jake Mace's videos on YouTube. Search "vegan athlete" and he has 100's of videos with detailed instructions on how to grow in raised beds and grow fruit trees in the Phx climate. Good luck! https://cals.arizona.edu/maricopa/garden/html/general/hort.htm

I bought Gardening in The Deserts of Arizona by Mary Irish off Amazon and definitely recommend it. I have also heard really great things about layered (or lasagna) gardening. I'm going to do it for fall planting. https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-make-a-lasagna-garden-2539877

There are two books that I keep readily available. One is about companion planting and keep like minded plants with similar needs together: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/161182.Great_Garden_Companions. The other is Mary Irish's book about what to plant when in the desert. https://www.amazon.com/Month-Month-Gardening-Desert-Southwest/dp/1591860008

SarahJane Tripp I like Summer Winds Nursery for good selection of seeds and veg or flower transplants. You can also stop by Roadrunner Park Farmers Market and Uptown Growers Market for some local transplant sellers such as Vilardi Gardens and Jim Dennis. Online good sources of heirloom veg seeds and based in AZ are Native Seeds Search in Tucson, and Terroir/Underwood in Chino Valley.
Mike H. replied:
Absolutely SarahJane Tripp. Great produce vendors, plants and seeds to buy, local honey and food items, crafts.....And fun. LINKS TO DETAILS ON BOTH: http://uptownmarketaz.com/ http://www.arizonafarmersmarkets.com/pageRoadrunner/roadrunner.htm
What type of trees are you trying to get into? There is no one place that sells the best off all trees in Phoenix, often they specialize in a certain group (tropicals, deciduous, citrus etc). Also on March 25 th at Mesa Community College our Arizona Rare Fruit Growers is having their spring sale.
Hi awesome group, I am looking for papaya seeds to grow in Northern California San Jose area. Does anyone know reliable websites to buy these seeds for germination? Any...
Andrea B. replied:
I've used the above method without issue. Most papayas at grocery stores that are shipped in get irradiated and it significantly if not completely reduces germination rates. It seems to be kind of hit or miss. I had success ordering organic papaya from www.miamifruit.org and sprouting those seeds but the less expensive route with more variety options would probably be Www.Tradewindsfruit.com they sell seeds for inexpensive when they're in stock. If you know someone that grows papayas you could always ask for seeds!

It depends on where you live in AZ we have some amazing zones just in the state.... Phoenix you can grow almost year round. And if water is to expensive hook up water catchment systems and check out Olla pots cuts down on the watering. They are easy to make too. If you are interested I live in AZ not the valley but right in between the state. I'm a Permaculture Designer and have a new YouTube that I'll be creating content on this very subject ; ) check it out if your interested. if there are any questions I can answer for you let me know :). https://youtu.be/3588KdxjGik
