A few months ago I posted about my 9yr old pup (Jasper) having arthritis issues. I got tons of info and tried differ things thanks to the Vet and your suggestions. I...

We used Care Credit for our yellow lab's $6,000 surgery when she was about 3 years old. It depends on what kind of plan your vet sets up but we had 6 months to pay it off interest free. Downside is if you miss a payment or are late you pay the full interest. I'm not sure what the rate was at that time. Good luck and 'm sure you'll do the best thing you can!

I had a big (88 pound) Husky, about the same age as Jasper, who went through two of these, 1998 and 2000. Had surgical repair done at Valley Veterinary Hospital, cost about $1000 each, done by an excellent surgeon - Kurt Hassinger - that Dr. Schreiber brought in for the kind of work. I realize prices have gone up, but $5,000 seems awfully high to me, I would get one or more other opinions. Also, I would definitely look into the brace idea. The ACL repair surgery is a very tough surgery, my dog never completely recovered psychologically. If the brace would work, I would suggest it, and if I were confronted with the same situation today, I'd go with the brace. Keep your boy as thin as you can, that helps a lot. There's a good brace place right down 23 (West) in Morgantown called My Pet's Brace. They work with vets all over the world, but you can also bring your boy in for a consult there. I think about $1000 was quoted to me on a rear leg brace, but not sure my memory serves me. They donated a brace to a little rescue chihuahua, I took them a bag of Sweeterwater Baking Company cookies to thank them, and so I was asking about this in casual conversation. https://www.facebook.com/MyPetsBrace?fref=ts

Jasper is 100 pounds and I do take him to valley vet. Dr Schreiber is who we saw. He's the one that told me approximately what it would cost. His actual thought was between 3 and 5K. He also said they can't do the surgery there. That I would need to see a specialist. I am looking into braces though.
Beta S. replied:
Interesting. Wonder what's changed. Maybe the consultant no longer consults. Dr. Hassinger came to the VV office, did it in the operating room there, Dr. Schreiber let me watch the surgeries (I don't think they can do that any more).

This is Hassinger's site, I recall Dr. Leslie Gall (French Creek Veterinary Service) saying he had set up his own practice. Might want to check with him on his price, it might be worth the travel. He's amazing, the hands fly, I wished I had a video camera, his hands were so fast and graceful it was almost like watching light trails. At the time he said he had done about 2000 of that particular operation (cruciate ligament repair). He actually uses a thick fishing monofilament to make the "fake" ligament. http://www.northeast-vet.com/Our_Team.html .

Like andrea votta we once had to use Care Credit for vet bills. It can also be used for dental expenses, etc.
Recently adopted a greyhound and I live in Old Forge. Any recommendations on a Veterinarian in the Old Forge/Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area?

Jacki Cromack Marko Does Dr Ayres give your dog(s) Lyme vaccines? The female vet we saw at Plains told me they don't believe in them, and she would not give our dog one when we took him there for his annual shots. When I told our old vet from Montgomery County, she had a fit and insisted I get him right into her for a shot (which I did). She could not believe a vet would refuse a Lyme vaccine for a dog that hikes in the woods in a place that is surrounded by deer. I like the new vet we found in Conyngham (Brookhill Animal Hospital) but their hours aren't that great and they are not really equipped to manage a really sick animal who needs overnight care. So still searching for someone who can cover those needs. I have heard good things about the practice in Clarks Summit
Robin R. replied:
I'm sorry you feel you had a bad experience at Plains, Lesley. I find the vets I have seen other than Dr. E there have been just fine (Drs. Ayers and Dorman), although Dr. E is always my first choice. I plan our yearly checkups based on her schedule, and if there is anything 'urgent' I roll with that. Our Garak would not be with us today were it not for every vet at Plains working with me and with Dr. Couto, so I have nothing but praise for them. I think we should forego the lyme vaccine discussion in general, because that's a very personal decision for each dog and their owner..... and there is data on both sides of the argument - it's not that 'crazy' to not vaccinate for Lyme in our area. I think ultimately, everyone needs to go to a vet they feel comfortable with, and I'd like to not be negative about any practice on this page if we can help it.
Lesley G. replied:
Robin M Rimsky, sorry if I have upset you or anyone else, but I think we should all feel free to share positive and negative experiences to help each other. We know that our dogs are different from other dogs and we need to be able to communicate and share. We've been through several traumatic experiences with our pets since moving up here a year ago (not the fault of Plains Animal Hospital or any other vet hospital), including the very sudden loss of one of our pets in the middle of the night and the "almost loss" of another (due to a serious problem going undiagnosed), and we are still searching for the right animal hospital. With our current 7 "fur babies", a number of them being elderly, we really need a place where there are vets on call 24/7. I ask for input and share what I know and have experienced with every pet owner I meet in our area in attempt to get needed information. I had never heard of foregoing Lyme vaccines for dogs and would really like to discuss this topic with others. In no way am I judging those who choose to forego the vaccine due to their own educated decisions. It's simply that we had used the same vet hospital for 20 years before moving up to the mountains, and I had always relied on the information I was given from that hospital. They earned our trust over the years because they were there 24/7 and twice saw our pets in the office in the middle of the night when we had medical emergencies. Plus they were with us every step of the way when we lost our beloved first greyhound to cancer at the age of six. That being said, I know there were others in the area who were not fond of the practice and voiced this in FB groups, and I listened and critically evaluated what was reported. I have enough medical training and experience with both humans and animals to know that it is good to question even the best of medical care. So if others don't believe in certain vaccinations (such as Lymes) and know of information/research that makes this vaccine controversial, I want to hear about it. I only want what is best for my babies and will seek information so that I can make the best decisions for them.

I have been going to Dr. David Fine in Larksville for 21 years. He immunizes against Lyme disease. I really like him and trust his judgement.

Citywide Animal Hospital in Dickson City. I first went to Dr. Dorton and I agree he is a good vet but he didn't know much about the breed.
David S. replied:
I use City Wide in Dicksoncity, it's just below the Viewmont mall. Some of the Doctors there are very knowledgeable about Greyhounds.

Both Amy and I go to Dr. Edwards at Plains Animal Hospital. She is great!
Donna P. replied:
VCA Dunmore Animal hospital. Dr. Falzone is very knowledgeable. I take both my greys there. Btw, I'm from Old Forge, too!
Lesley G. replied:
I have been told Dr Edwards is only at Plains Animal Hosp. one day/wk now. We had a bad experience there with another vet and a neighbor also was unhappy. It's a good option if you can get Dr Edwards but that is not easy unless you can plan well ahead for visits
