Just wondering if anyone knows the name of the Exeter based Morris Mini car dealer in 1967?
Peter R. replied:
Probably P Pike and Co in Alphington Street
Joe S. replied:
Motor Macs which were just under the Railway bridge on marsh barton were bought out by Mumford and Sons also you had Eveleighs Garage ans Sidwell Street Motors . Pikes in Alphington Street where the Riverside now stands became Wadham Stringer and you also had Pikes Motorcycles on the opposite side of the road.
Oh dear, British Leyland encompassed, Austin/morris/Jaguar/Rover/Triumph and later MG.
Edward G. replied:
From a 1963 Exeter Directory:- Motor Macs, Paris Street, but no dealership listed. AJ Beal Ltd Bridge St and Queen St. Austin Retail dealers and Jaguar. Barton Motor Company, Sidwell St, Morris and Wolseley. P Pike and Co Austin Car and Austin Commercial- Austin Distributors. Yes I agree Paul Coneybeare it became British Leyland but prior to that it was just BMC (Austin & Morris partnership).
Richard J. replied:
Motor macs was the standard triumph dealer. Boss was Colonel Hacking his son went on to Mumfords and now lives in Ebford. The Rover dealership the Bedford Garage owned by Mr Hughes of Hughes of Exeter the Ford dealership in Princesshay. Bedford garage was just down from our family business the Exeter Ignition Company and all the garages in Exeter were our customers. There were many sub dealers for BMC. Yeo and Davey Old Tiverton Rd were Morris, Lock brothers in Ladysmith Road were Triumph. Devon Motors in Cowick St owned by Dingle Davey were ford. I can go on for ages
Richard J. replied:
AJ Beale and sons were Jaguar and the two sons now live in JERSEY
Julie P. replied:
Hi Richard, yes A.J.Beal Ltd., were the Jaguar Main Dealers in Exeter, my husband Bob Passmore was an apprenticed motor mechanic in 1959, and went on to become their Service Manager when it was sold to Wadham Stringer in 1979/80. You may also remember my Dad Jim Steele who was also the Sales Manager for over 35 years. John and George Beal are well, and still living in Jersey.
Tony B. replied:
I think it was the Barton Motor Company or Evleighs in Sidwell street. My dad Bill Bell worked for Pikes, the Austin dealers in Alphington Street.
Richard J. replied:
Owned by Dick Barton and Paul Commin. Paul's sons Mike lives in Lympstone and used to own station Garage Topsham
Edward G. replied:
It could have been either. PIkes was originally Austin, and agree with Mac about Motor Macs. Don't know about Barton, but I am sure you are right. However - Austin and Morris combined in about 1951?2 to form the British Motor Corporation. and subsequently Pikes effectively supplied both, so I assume the same probably happened to other dealerships. Pikes had a very prominent red and white BMC sign displayed, and eventually, as stated elsewhere, were bought out by Wadham Stringer
Oh good *sigh* ...Can anyone recommend a good second hand car dealer in Plymouth? Looks like we might be needing a new Fiesta :/
Anna-Lisa W. replied:
Joanne Nickson yup! It needs a diagnostics test but we need to decide if it's worth throwing anymore money at it To be fair it's 12 years old now so it's done well, but I was hoping it'd last just one more year. Arse.
Anyone know of any good cheap car dealers in Plymouth?! Need a runaround for about £1000 but can stretch to £1200?! Cheap I know, any ideas?! Dave Buckler maybe you...
