I work at a local shop that is genuinely amazing so I'm biased, but when I was looking for a new artist I looked on Instagram. Search like #renotattoos or something along those lines and start following any artists you like. I just weeded out the ones I didn't like over a few months and by the time I was ready to get tattooed I only followed 1 or 2 and kinda had an idea of where to go. Idk, that worked for me, hope it helps!!

Spend the time and go to different shops around town to feel them out, talk to people there and look at portfolios. I went to 6 different places before deciding, and the decision came down to 2 different places after actually going inside.

Got mine done at Lake Monster Tattoo in Tahoe. They charge different but not by the hour. The owner did mine and my god I've gotten many compliments. Check out his FB and gram. Its worth it. Just a heads up the owner is talented as hell and he can get hard to book but again, worth every penny.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Some artists specialize in different disciplines. Tony Medellin is one of the most talented dudes I've ever seen, especially when it comes to Traditional and script work. Brian Chambers does absolutely phenomenal realism stuff. Lasting Dose and Reno Tattoo Co. are the two shops in town I always recommend.
