We didn't go with the cheap quote. That came from Daves and had a "Home Show" discount for booking a quote at the show. We went with Jamie Mathews of Matthews Hardwood. We didn't want an oil finish and Jamie's work ethic impressed us. We did a stain called Puritan Pine and a Streetshoe 3 step finish. We opted to not fix squeaks since we have a finished basement and didn't want to top nail. We also had severe damage from an old owners desk chair that he feathered new boards into. Our biggest issue with sanding was "flake boards" we had a few that needed to be replaced.

We updated our kitchen and had the same dilemma. We wanted the continuity and chose to stay with the inch and a half oak and are happy with it. We found the flooring at Hardwood Flooring Supply, Inc on Hwy 169N but that was back in 2005. I don't know if they are still in business or not. You'll have more success with a specialty store than a chain store I'd expect.
