Any advice on ear mites....? Should I try a home remedy on Mr Max or rather bring him to you (or another reliable vet that you can recommend) for proper treatment?
Open P. replied:
If you travel outside KSA there are some good modern products (the ivomecs that you can just apply to the cat's skin) e.g. http://www.revolutionpet.com/revolutionpet.aspxhttp://www.acarexx.com/ http://www.milbemite.novartis.us/ http://www.petparents.com/show.aspx/products/advantage-multi-for-cats :) there are also products for dogs, but some dogs (Collie breeds) have a gene which means they can NOT have ivomec treatments so please check with your vet at home first.

Sunette, no, home treatment works, it just takes a lot longer and is more difficult, Amani is right, olive oil will work fine - but you need to put in a few drops and clean the ears daily for about a month. You don't really need a vet consultation if it is ear mites, I can dispence something for you BUT I'd like to speak to you first, just a few questions to check it is earmites and not something else. :) Lana 0501198458 and wow! didn't that little kitten of yours grow into the most handsome young man-cat! what a sweetie!
Hello
Does anyone know of a vet clinic in Riyadh that is open today (Friday)?? Or a vet who can make a housecall?
Thank you!
Open P. replied:
none of the clinics are open Friday - vets do need a day off too ya know. and don't be tempted, AVOID PET SHOPS! APC is supposed to have a duty vet (for URGENT stuff only please) the number is on their clinic answer phone message (01 2637144) There have been several reports to me from people who have not been able to reach them though - so dial carefully Or you can try Dr Awad(0505270236 or 0540020721):)

Vets in Riyadh: Advanced Pet Clinic, near the Panda at exit 6, 01 2637144 Riyadh Vets, near to exit 10, 01 456 8736 Dr Omer at Joon is ok, but I’m not sure what equipment they have their for diagnostics PLEASE do NOT use other “pet-shop-vets” the places are not clean and the vets do not have widely recognized qualifications. What we can offer: free vet advice!:D, either on line askthevet@OpenPaws.org or you can call Drs Ingrid (0502531124) or Lana (0501198458) -between 8am-8pm (we need to sleep too!). If we can help we will. Sometimes our advice is “you do need to take your pet to a clinic for treatment / tests”, please don’t hesitate to ask but we don’t run a private clinic—maybe one day!

Summer, all cats reproduce kittens, and they wont tell you or ask for permission! So its not wise to leave them unneutered or spayed. De. Ingrid and Dr. Lana have taught us a lot and its best to take the advice and have your animals fixed before they go into heat and the mating season. Please contact Dr. Daisy or Dr. Ingrid about this, they will help you I am certain, they have helped all of us. Thanks, Lobat
Open P. replied:
Even if you have one male, some of the kittens will be male and cats are incestuous ie sisters will mate with brothers once they are old enough etc etc. What will happen when you end up with 100 cats in total in a few years time? It is inevitable that most will end up in homes where people will tire of them and then they will end up on the street. No one can handle that many cats. Its a fact. It is in the best interests of the cats that they are all neutered. It is a simple operation and Dr Ingrid has very kindly offered to do it for free. It really is best to take their advice. Thanks, Naryman

Hello Dr.Lana
I have a kitten at the age almost 3 months
Yesterday was the first day for him in the house
(No mother with him)
I noticed that he sneezes continuously...
Open P. replied:
Umm Safa is right. get the kitten on a high quality, kitten food. cheese is NOT a diet for kittens.:o ok, so your Kitten has 2 problems: sneezing, and vomiting. The sneezing is likely to be one of the kinds of cat flu. usually from a virus these sneezy problems don't have a cure (available here) but usually go away after a week or 2. Make sure the kitten isn't starting to get secondary bacterial infections - pus around the eyes or a snotty nose. If this starts then some abiotics will help. therwise with a virus it's just good nurcing to get his own body's immune system to clear the infection. The condition is VERY contagious between cats to any contact with other cats should be avoided - that means you too need to wash your hands, etc between touching him and any others. Vaccinating cats prevents this problem - did you find the kitten as an orphan? if not, remine the owner of the mother that vaccination is very important. NOTE - you can NOT vaccinate a sick cat (or person), vaccination is a prevention it is NOT a cure. Vaccinating when the animal is sick will make it worse. Vomiting: Kittens often vomit if they eat too quickly and in this case th milk may have caused the problem too. If it was just one time and he's ok now, don't worry. But change the diet! Royal Canin is best. If he's not used to eating dry food, start by mixing a bit of the whiskas canned food with it. Whiskas canned food is pretty good too. (he may get some diarrhoea after taking the milk / cheese too) If kitty loves milk, you can use Almarai Lactose free milk - it won't upset his tummy. Still, I recommend it only as a treat - at 3 months, he should be drinking water. hope that is helpful! -Lana

In this case "Fofa" doesn't really need to take the kitten to a vet. And, correctly, some people who call themselves vets (usually in pet shops) are not well trained to help. BUT there are vets in Riyadh. - Riyadh Vets: 014568736 - APC clinic: 012637144 We are happy to give advice when we can but there's no excuse to say "I can not go to a vet" ;(

The vet clinics in Riyadh are: Riyadh Vets: 01 4568736 and Advanced Pet Clinic: 01 2637144. Please never go to a vet in a pet shop as these are often not qualified vets and pet shops are very infectious and spread disease and infection to pets. Best wishes, Naryman

Hello all. Question: Where is the best place to get kittens spayed, in Jeddah? I have a 6 month old kitten, who I'd like to get spayed. She's currently getting her...
Open P. replied:
Good questions, glad you asked! Dr Niati (I think that's his name) at Jeddah Vets is ok but don't let Dr Khan (also at Jeddah vets) touch your cat!!! You are correct in your research, it is better to neuter animals before their first heat - each breeding season they go through creates aging changes to the reproductive track which can lead to disease changes or even cancer. If she is IN the heat cycle when the operation is done it is more difficult for the surgeon and therefore more risk to the cat, but before the first heat cycle is the easiest. If you leave it until after the heat cycle (you have to live through her very annoying yowling and crazy behaviour she will have) and there is a risk she could get pregnant. I don't know what complications your vet is worried about to do it at this age. My advice: get it done asap - before she is teen-age pregnant:) -Lana
