Sarah, take it by an Autozone or similar store and have them run the fault codes. Also, the air filter will have an effect on your fuel mileage, so try to get that replaced as soon as you can. If you are smelling fuel, then that is a definite sign of a leak. You don't want to turn the car on, if you find a puddle under your car. If you aren't scared to get under your car, then turn the car off, put the emergency brake on, take a flashlight and follow the fuel line leading out of the tank...if you see any signs of moisture, then there is a leak. If you don't see anything there, pop the hood and see if you see any moisture on or around the engine and spark plugs. Things can go bad on a car at any moment. My car passed inspection over Thanksgiving and 2 days later my Dad and I found a coolant leak and signs that my radiator is going bad...things happen.
