You pretty much can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon DSLR. Sony, Panasonic and Olympus make good ones too but Canon and Nikon are the most popular Basically search for a deal, even an 'older' one is perfectly fine. I'd also recommend giving her this book with it Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-3 rd-Photographs-Camera/dp/0817439390/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1399989415&sr=1-1&keywords=bryan+peterson) it teaches how to use the 'manual' features which most photographers want (assuming your daughter isn't already familiar with those features)

I started with a Nikon D3000. It's great for a beginner. I also highly recommend Bryan Petersons book.
Jennifer N. replied:
A Cannon XS is a great starter camera. Also, get her a 50 mm lens, the kit lens that comes with most beginner cameras are crap.
