Just checked out of Yes Lisbon and it's definitely one of the best (easily top 3) hostels I've stayed at in Europe. They have a great common area, run 2 different free walking tours, trips to Sintra, and have an awesome dinner every night. Beds are super comfortable and you get your own lamp and outlets

Good Morning Hostel is the best hostel I've ever stayed in throughout my world travels. It has 9.8/10 on Hostelworld. If they even have vacancy do yourself a favor and book a dorm bed: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Goodmorning-Lisbon-Hostel/Lisbon/59901

Stay at home Lisbon hostel if they have an opening! I was there two weeks ago and it was amazing. They've won best hostel worldwide multiple times through hostelworld.com. They will even take you surfing at one of the best surfing spots in the world. I'm serious, best hostel I've ever stayed in Edit: they also have a homemade family style dinner in the evening where you can meet tons of people, some of which I continued to travel with afterwards!

Hostel rossio is awesome. The hosts are super cool (still need to give one a whine bottle opener since I broke their one, oops) but really nice people, in the heart of lisbon and affordable!

i stayed at lisbon lounge and loved it. the nightly dinner is great for people meeting and i'm still friends with some people i met there years ago. it's not a party hostel though so if that's what you're looking for, look at yes hostels.

When I was in Rome a few months ago I stayed at the Happy Days hostel. It was about as cheap as they get in Rome and reasonably clean. Not one of my favorite hostels, but not bad, and very cheap for Rome.

Look around on hostels.com - whichever one you choose, make sure you choose one with good a/c. It's absolutely critical as September is still hot in Rome.
