An older Singer will probably be much better than a new one. Check Craigslist or a Facebook Marketplace or the like for vintage machines. And they are usually cheap. Use the money you saved to get it serviced once this coronavirus stuff is over.

Slightly off-topic here, but for a good reason. My mother was a fashion designer who made all my childhood clothes and half of my teen clothes on a 1938 Singer 99 from my father's mother. Well-fitting, cute-to-dramatic clothes rolled off that machine just like oxygen to breathe. I didn't need to learn how to sew until later and it came to me pretty naturally, but what I failed to do, and really encourage you to do now, is save some things your mother has made for you. Later you will cherish them. All I have left are some adorable doll clothes my mother created and some sewing notions of hers.

The new Singers are not like the old ones. New owners, cheap, etc. Let you mom in on what to pick. She's a pro and would know what's necessary and what's not. She should try out each one at a local dealer/repair shop once things lighten up. These places have used ones in the back. If you need to mail order, this place has refurbished and used ones listed online. She can call and discuss preferences. He's bad bcuz my suits were anywhere between 2,3 sizes too big & he made them fit perfectly. Executive something is the name of his shoppe.
