Can anyone recommend a vet in the St. Pete / Tyrone area?
Kerry H. replied:
We left what used to be an awesome vet in Dunedin/Clearwater because they had expanded their practice and were so ridiculously focused on money and not the animals that it was hard to believe it was the same place. However, we love Westlake Animal Hospital up in Tarpon Springs. Great care, great prices, great people. A large multi-vet practice that gets it right.
Diane M. replied:
I always laugh when they try and convince me to get a full physical, complete with blood work for my 12 year old dog. I don't even get 2 physicals a year, and mine is covered by insurance! Years ago a dog got a rabies shot, and that was about it. I have a friend who also reminds me that it Vets are basically a cash business....pure profit. I know of so many people, though, who do get sucked in to the outrageous 'end of life' treatments. One of my friends, an elderly woman, paid thousands to Haines Road over a few months to treat her dog who died anyway. He was pretty old as well and had no quality of life during this time. After Haines Road I took my dog to Northeast Vet and he needed some special treatment. They wanted me to take him to a specialty Vet in Tampa at the bargain price of about $2 k for the weekend. I said no, I couldn't do that. The Vet was wonderful and completely understanding and gave me the support and supplies and instruction I needed to be able to administer the drugs myself, including a subcultaneous fluids (which is like an IV but it is under the skin and not into a vein). I gave him fluids and meds every couple of hours, and had to feed him water and special food through a syringe, but he made it through the weekend and did very well. I think the Vet was surprised he did so well. I was quite grateful, and believe THAT is what a Vet should do--not question your loyalty to your pet!
Donna A. replied:
Speaking of end of life care... The most dreaded subject ever...We don't have a regular vet that we see these days but we needed the services of one because one of our 12 yr old dogs was ear the end of her life cycle. I did some research on line and came across a group of vets locally ( and nationally) that do end of life care right in your own home. We called the vet for the Tampa Bay area for more info and when the time came she was able to come to our house promptly & assist our beloved dog with a gentle as possible passing. Our dog passed away in our arms cradled on our laps surrounded by the family who loved her.The vet was kind and compassionate & we couldn't have had a better experience. There was no lecture, guilt or insensitivity about what we "should have done" just acceptance and compassion which was greatly needed at the time. Diane your story is not an uncommon one.Who knows our pets better than we do.Vets that try and sway& guilt people into doing more than what is logical near the end of a pets life are not to be trusted. The vet service that we used is called " Lap of Love" . Dr. Dani McVety is the doctor. If you don't have a regular vet or would prefer your pet to be comfortable in their own home when it's their time call her. (813)407-9441
Kerry H. replied:
We used Lap of Love for our almost 17 year old Australian Shepherd - Sydney in early December. It was Dr Jennifer Saez from the same practice that came to our house here in Gulfport. It was very peaceful and lovely. She took her away when it was all over and we picked up her cremains at our vet. I told her it takes a special kind of person to be going around and performing that service for people all the time. It was so much nicer for our old girl to go in her own home.
Sarah C. replied:
Connechusett Animal Hospital located at 1456 Jordan Hills Ct, Clearwater, FL 33756 727-446-3190. They are absolutely wonderful! Very caring and extremely reasonable rates. I found them through a personal referral after Noah's Place on 62 nd Ave kept insisting my Rottie had a flea allergy. Turned out to be cancer. The folks at Connechusett helped us to make him comfortable until he passed.
Claire F. replied:
We have used the vet on Pasadena Avenue for many years, I believe that it is called Gulf Animal hospital, the techs and vets are amazing and very considerate and will work with the owner discussing the best care and have even made a follow up call the next day to check up on our pet. Cannot say enough good things about them, as for pricing I feel that they are reasonable compared to other vets in the area.
Kerry H. replied:
We found this helpful to keep in mind Julie. http://www.lapoflove.com/default.aspx?sid=6 We tended to second guess a bit but took ourselves out of the equation and asked ourselves how it would sound if we heard somebody else describing our dog's condition to us as if it were their dog -- that helped a lot.
Kerry H. replied:
"They also try and intimidate you by the 'don't you love your pet' type of sales pitch." -- Speaking of these kind of tactics -- Don't EVER use the emergency vet on 22 nd N (Animal Emergency Clinic). They tried the same tactics on me for my dog. He had some puncture wounds after being attacked. The place on 22 nd N wanted to charge me almost $800. I had the good sense to look at their itemized list. They wanted to charge me $30 for a prescription that I could have gotten free at Publix so I had them write me a script and waited and took my dog to our own vet the next morning where it cost me all of $40 NOT $800. My vet was disgusted.
Julie A. replied:
Bayshore Animal Hospital. Right by Walmart I take all of my babies there.
Laura M. replied:
Tyrone Vet. Hospital! Every state I have ever lived in and had to take my furbabies to the Vet's made me miss that PLACE!!!
Diane M. replied:
Try and hook up with PetPal Vet Services. IT's not fancy, but they are so nice, and the prices are fabulous. They are on 34 th St S near 18 th Ave or so. My dog needed a dental, and while everywhere else was around $300, they charge less than half. AND she has had multiple cleanings, and this was by far the best job of all. What I like is they aren't just in it for the money--they actually support Pet Pal Rescue. They also have lower cost flea and heartworm products. I've also gone to Northeast Vet on 4 th at 13 th or so. Vets are very nice, but I noticed a fairly high turnover of Vets! Rates are pretty high, but I've found that in a lot of the Vets in this area so they aren't really out of line. I did go to Haines Road, but every time I went in there it cost twice what I thought it would cost--or what I was quoted. LOVE Dr. Vincente, but it simply became way too expensive. And when I complained about a $1400 bill after a $700 'outside' estimate, they got mad, I got mad, and we parted ways. (there was also an $8 charge for trimming ONE dew claw, but they did remove it after I said that was outrageous). They have a lot of support personnel working there and I'm sure that increases costs, but frankly, I do not think it is necessary for a Vet to pay a person to greet the client at the door and then walk them to the counter to check in. It's wasteful, and adds unnecessary costs. But that's just me.
Kerry H. replied:
Friends use Skyway and they love it. We haven't found a new one near Gulfport yet. We've been schlepping to our old vet up in Tarpon Springs because we love them so much -- Westlake Animal Hospital. However, several of my dog park friends use Skyway and they love them. http://www.skywayah.com/
Silvia L. replied:
ok girls, you made a good point. i have calmed down, but it was very annoying at Gulfport Vet on Gulfport Blvd. i had scheduled an appt for my two cats. the small waiting area was completely packed w/dogs. waited 80 minutes, decided to ask technician when did she anticipate us beeing seen, she said regular VET wasn't in and i would probably be another good hours....REALLY? these people serious?! why not inform ur customers and let them decide if they want to wait, or can wait. i used to go there a few yrs. ago and never had a bad experience....however i did use them then for their affordability. not again!!!
Carl E. replied:
If it's cats there is no place better than the Cat Hospital in South Pasadena. On the corner of Park St. and 1 st Ave. South. A little pricey but nobody better. And I wouldn't take a stuffed animal to Gulfport Vet.
Anybody have a vet recommendation in St. Pete? I've heard NE Animal Hospital is pricey.

That stinks because the xrays will be the cheap part. That's usually treated with surgery. Park animal hospital has always been very reasonable as well as Florida Vet Clinic but unsure if they do xrays in house.
