We are trying to plan a trip to the UK. Do my experienced travelers recommend using a travel agent for a week long trip? We have zero skills

We bought a 3 day London Pass..I recommend looking into this for any city of interest. If you actually go to 2-3 sites a day, it is worth the money...but you have to coordinate times to get your money's worth. http://www.londonpass.com/?aid=17...

Try www.couchsurfing.org to meet great locals who will show you around

We've never used an agent, just shop online for airfare and hotels. Highly recommend vrbo.com if you are interested in renting home/apt/condo anywhere, owners can also often help with other activities. We did it for Paris and had an amazing apt for a week.

Where are you going? International multi legs flights I use my sister (via Airtreks), and for accomodations/trip planning I use Meg at Global Base Camps. Meg did my Morrocco and Thailand trips - she's awesome. For domestic stuff I don't really have anyone though:/
