Super Sarretto in Escazu. Carries way more European stuff than any other store in the city. As for American.. they have a good selection and it's not associated with Walmart!!

Santa Barbera de Heredia - you can find "El Arco de las yerbas" on WAZE. Also they have a great web page that tells you how to arrive by bus. You can pay to take a tour or just go to the greenhouses where they sell plants.

Harts always had a special place in my memories.I was a wayward youth, My mom worked two jobs when we first arrived 1939, This left me wild and free to explore the Santa Clara County/ Santa Cruz universe. I came to the attention of the police department one night very late when my moms( it's the cars fault) car hit a gas pump on North First. My mom had no idea i had pushed the car out to the street and visited Santa Cruze, I was 12 years old. SO, I had the damage to the gas station, damage to the car and no drivers license. I visited the police department and waited for what seemed forever in a little holding cell across the drive through for my Mom..., The Bottom line, the Sgt on duty was Sgt Blackmore, his son was in my class at Horace Mann. I had to appear in court, pay for the damage to the gas station and attend drivers training once a week foir 2 months. Sgt Blackmoore escourted me to the YMCA and introduced me to Mr Campbell the Director. He gave me a stern talk and offered me a free membership to the YMCA, mentioned summer camp was coming up and i could go. The amount of the Fee I have forgotton. He said he would look into how we could get it paid. Few dys later he spoke to my Mom and said Mr Hart had donated the cost of the Y membership and the Camping Experance. I had no experience with this type of generosity. It had been my Mom and I againist the world. In many ways it changed my life. Harts, Mr Campbell and Sgt Blackmoore will remain in my thouughts forever.

I remember my mom taking my brother and me to downtown SJ to do banking in the 60's. Otherwise we went to Valley Fair for retail shopping. Downtown has died, long ago.
