Recommendations for guitar instructors in San Jose Hi all,
As the title says, I'm looking for beginner guitar lessons/schools in the bay area for adults. I would...

Honestly, I've been to four different private guitar instructors in the area and none of them had musical training beyond a high school level. They were nice people, but their lack of formal education left pretty significant gaps in what they taught. There aren't regulatory systems in place to ensure that private instrument teachers meet academic requirements or any kind of necessary certification program, and this leads to voice, piano, guitar, etc. teachers who just decided to become teachers, resulting in a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills. Some are amazing, some have no business teaching.
My suggestion would be to look at local community colleges, in particular De Anza or West Valley. The music faculty are Masters Degree and above and the entire quarter/semester will only cost you like $80-140. This means more qualified teachers at a far lower cost.

If it's beginners guitar lessons you can probably go to any of them. You'll need to understand the basic structure of playing which consist of chords, beats, picking and what not. That should take you a bit to learn depending on the hours you put in. Once you get to that point where you can start playing full songs, bar chords, scales, solos etc etc - you can start finding teachers who specialize in a specific style. Thats just from personal experience but everybody has their own experience of playing.
I personally like Tap-tempo located on Bascom. Small shop who probably needs our support if we want them to stick around.
Feel free to ask any questions and i'll try my best to answer. I'm sure there's some good players here on this sub.

My friend was a beginning guitarist a year ago and started taking lessons at CB Perkins. They're a small, family business and very nice. She's really improved and the lessons really seem to be working.

Keith Holland Guitars has some of the best instructors in the Bay Area. Robert Whitmeyer and Sam Eigen are standouts http://www.keithhollandguitars.com/school-of-music.html

Guitar Showcase has lesson workshops in various styles and the instructors look pretty qualified. You could attend a few of those to see if there is anyone you would be interested in studying privately with.
