Bill Nixon - If you're seeking QUALITY - HANDS DOWN - ABNER ARIAS!! I've been using Abner for over 6-7 or so years when I had my guest house in Escazu, for myself & friends/family!! He lived in the U.S. for 10 years so he speaks good English, he GETS U.S. level of Customer Service (RARE here based on MY standards), he has a U.S. # for you to call him on & all sorts of toys/gadgets (including a WiFi Hotspot when you're around him & Skype). He's not the cheapest as he's more upscale level of service (he works with many film shoots. He's not high high end). AND, he's TOTALLY LEGAL (MANY people being offered are NOT which means they're not insured to transport paying customers & you could have a problem if they get stopped & asked for their papers [I've SEEN that happen]). Don't believe me - read the 15 reviews on him in Trip Advisor!! http://TripAdvisor.com/Attraction_Review-d6717259

My wife and I would like to make a trip to CR next spring - March or April. I've checked the travel agencies but, most are $3k or more for a couple of weeks. We aren't...

Ron - Just finishing up our first trip to CR and loving it, my wife and I are planning on coming back down the first week in April. You will find that the car rental will likely cost as much as where you stay. I would suggest looking at Craig's List Costa Rica under vacation rentals. You can find deals for renting by the day, week or month. I haven't done this yet but it appears to be a good alternative to more expensive hotels. Check and ensure they have high standard plumbing installed. Good luck and enjoy your visit.

If you are wanting to travel around the country then I would contact Nina at Gecko Trail Adventure. http://www.geckotrail.com/ They will really work with you to figure out what you want and will come up with an itinerary that you can afford at nice places all over the country. The car rental will be the most expensive piece as William said. If you want to have a home base then I would do as William says and check Craigs list. We live here and I have no interest in Gecko - just have heard really good things and had good experience with them.

AirBnB.com -stay nice places for way less and meet people!
Mark P. replied:
Where is your base going to be? Or will you be moving around? AirBnB.com is a good place to know people who are living here and they can give you another point of view.
Ron S. replied:
As of yet, we don't know where our basecamp will be but, I've checked most of the ideas presented here and so far, things are looking very promising. AirBnB.com looks like a great place to explore. I like the fact that I can find a place that might suit our needs and provide a location to work from. Thanks again, for all your help!
Sharon H. replied:
Check your credit card company to see if they cover insurance on a rental car as the insurance here can be as high as the rental. Also check google for vacation rentals Costa Rica you may find condo's for rent in different area's. Check Trip Adviser and Hotels.com for Hotels and B&B's.
