Recommendations for a quick, cheap lawyer to create last will and testament in Saskatoon? Nothing complicated going in, just need someone to draw it up and notarize it.
PreEntertain replied:
In Saskatchewan you can write your Last Will & Testament on a piece of looseleaf and shove it in a cutlery drawer and it will be legally binding. Provided you don't have one written elsewhere that will be more official. All started when some poor farmer wrote his last will & testament on a piece of farming equipment he was stuck under with a rock he found near by.

Mathiason Valkenburg & Polishchuk on 22 nd (just across from the Sturdy Stone Center) did my will, also my dad's power of attorney and living will and they were pretty inexpensive

Who knows a lawyer that would love to fight the City of Saskatoon for me?
Søren N. replied:
This is what happens when city hall is full of developers. Try my friend Ian Smith at http://www.bergermanlaw.com/About.htm Not sure what, if anything, he can do. But he did specialize in property law at one point, so he can probably let you know if anything can be done.
Does anyone know who I might want to go to about power of attorney? I'm moving internationally in a few months, and want to give my mother power of attorney for taxation...

I’m curious as to how you brought this up with your partner, this is something I’d be looking at before moving in with mine, but it can be a touchy subject

Tara at CJC & Co. did ours back in the day. It was pretty basic so we got her to draw it up together, and she then referred me to another lawyer who kept my end of the cost down (as I was a broke student at the time). I would definitely recommend her!

As a lawyer (who does not specifically practice in family law) I can say that the lawyer you choose matters. The relationship that you have with them is like any other professional or person, you have to click, be comfortable, trust them, and it’s nice to enjoy your time with them. Basically what I’m saying is if you don’t feel comfortable with your doctor you would find a different one. The same thing goes for a lawyer.
At my office, Jessie Buydens has done many and in follow up when I deal with clients for other types of matters they speak highly of the interaction with her.
I’d recommend, who ever you consider using from the recommendations that many have posted, call first, try and talk to them a bit to get basic information. Usually a first impression can go pretty far in determining if you want them to be your lawyer. It’s certainly not a guarantee that everything will go great, but it’s nice when a lawyer takes the time to speak with you and answer your basic questions without asking your for money first... first impressions are certainly not a guarantee, but they can help come to your decision about who you pick in the end.
Best of luck to you, I hope you find someone great!

I can't help you since we never had one done, but probably any good lawyer specializing in family law would be able to help.
However, I wouldn't have moved in with my husband nor married him if I didn't think we would stick it out for the long haul. So hence we didn't get a prenup, and also because both knew if we did split up neither of us is the type to be spiteful/unfair. He was making more money than me at the time (I was a student) but now the tables have turned and I make more money. So anything we signed back then wouldn't necessarily reflect our current and future financial situations.
I'd suggest making sure it is fair and that it is created to take both of your interests into consideration, including in the future, especially if you're getting it drafted on your own and presenting it to your partner to sign (as otherwise they may not agree to sign which could cause problems with your relationship). Or better yet, you go together and have something drafted that you both can agree on and that is fair to both parties.

McDougall Gauley. Costs are hard to say because lawyers all have different rates and depending on whether there is back and forth between you and your partner and how much back and forth occurs that can easily drive the costs up. It doesnt hurt to call around and get a ballpark estimate.
