Did anyone tried meican.com ? It's a great way to find restaurants that can deliver around you. The website is in chinese, but with Google Translate (translate the whole website) , it really is easy to order food from real chinese restaurants at chinese prices. You've got dozens of choices, usually good prices, and like I said you can use it even if you can't speak chinese ! Just enter your address once, the restaurants around you will pop up on the map & the main page. (and i'm in luohu too btw). Choose your menu, click order and Meican's team will take care of everything !

For Chinese my favourite is a very small restaurant next to Dongjiatou metro called Sun Shi Jiao Zi Guan (孙氏饺子馆) - it has a shenzheneat.com sticker on the window, so easy to spot. The lunch buffet at Shark Futian is fantastic, buffet for 68 rmb but you can add a main course (I added the sausage and mash, which was spectacular) and it came to 88 rmb total. Just a couple of suggestions.

Can anyone recommend any good Chinese restaurants that are a bit different to the usual stuff, and very authentic to their region?
Alex P. replied:
You can try Xinjiang cuisine ( http://www.shenzhenparty.com/places/food-drink/restaurants/muslim-cuisine-restaurant-yidi-gude ) the settings are quite nice, as well as the food (lamb is a default choice). Another idea, which is never a miss - Beijing duck ( http://www.diningcity.cn/en/shenzhen/restaurant_1949_Duck_de_Chine - rather pricey, though). And you'd better ask your CN colleagues/ friends for the best restaurants with cuisine of their provinces - they would be more then happy to recommend & to guide you.

These are just the places near Dongmen. I know that there are some places that I'm missing. There are loads more once you leave the area. (also, Costco sells discounted voucher books to Easyhouse which is in Xinyi and next to the Donghua Eslite, and is also good at Easyhouse America which serves American style vegetarian food in Banqiao and Danshui)

I just discovered a great restaurant called Tasty. It is a steak restaurant, and western style for sure. I can't believe it is so close to where I live and work for 1 1/2 years, and I never eat there. There may be several, but the one I went to is in the World Financial Center in Luohu.I ordered from the Fixed menu, and for 150 yuan, I had Mushroom Soup, A salad with Chicken, Bread with Cheese sauce, a special drink, and a very good steak. Included was desert, and I ordered Tiramisu. It is on Shennan Lu, south side, same building where the Starbucks is. Shennan Lu where it runs under the train tracks. It is across the street from my new office, at 4002 Shennan East Road.

I am the same--vegetarian but don't mind by-products/eating around the meat in a dish. I have no problems finding food in Shenzhen :)
For some reason I've found Jiangnan-style food to have the most vegetarian options on the menu:
1) Grandma's House (外婆家) and Green Tea (绿茶), which has a few locations. They are almost identical, inexpensive with nice atmospheres, and awesome food. However, they always have a long line at dinner time and don't take reservations.
2) 江南味道, I've been to one in MixCity Mall (connected to Grand Theatre station) but there are a few more locations more west.
3) 南小官 (I think the English name is "The Dining Room") in Wongtee Plaza near the Convention & Exhibition Center, also a location in Coco Park, probably more. This one feels a bit like a cafe but always clean and pretty, and probably less of a line.
If you want something a bit more formal, there's a really nice specifically vegetarian restaurant/teahouse a friend took me to in Luohu a while back but I can't remember the name. I can ask if you want.
Edit: Green Tea actually has a location in Bao'an, closest to Fanshen station!

If you want to eat the best Thai food in Shenzhen, go to Very Siam in Oct loft. Nice place; decor, food and atmosphere are ace. Not the cheapest place, but a good choice. Not far, there is a little noodle shop that converts into a Jazz bar at night...the name escapes me at the moment. It is beside a youth hostel. OCT isn't a big time party place, but if you go to the loft there are so many places to grab a quiet, intimate drink. I personally abhor Coco Park.
