We followed the same process as Mark Maggiore a few years ago - simple. The best thing I ever did was convert from oil to gas, my heating bill is down 65% or more each heating season.
John M. replied:
Every answer above is wrong. SELCO will net meter. That is the law. SELCO is not an investor owned utility and is therefor not required to engage in contract with third party energy providers though. Third party energy providers and Investor Owned utilities must have a certain portion of their portfolio in renewable energy resources. They can distribute under contract those resources to third party providers, such as NRG, or Solar City who you see advertised. Those renewable energy resources need not be in their service area, which is why you see Commonwealth Edison building utility level Solar plants in our area. The energy providers you see at Home Depot, etc. get tax credits to develop renewable energy and they sell you the electricity that their panels generate. They are able to sell it cheaper than the default Generation, Transmission and Distribution rates, because they receive very generous tax credits. Those credits however are only available to customers served by Investor Owned utilities. SELCO is not that. They are subject to different regulations and are not required to meet renewable energy goals that companies like National Grid are. As far as being "trapped" with SELCO, Linda Gagliastre, look around at any Investor Owned Utility rates, like Western Electric, Unitil, or National Grid. We pay a lot less than those rates. A lot. The service is much better too.
