Seward Ford is probably on right track. When I was a kid, Mr. Glen(?) Hilton had a news stand just west of the old PO. He was succeed by Stub Smith. At the moment I can't make a connection with the name Lynch, but I do also associate Riedel's with that site. Probably the same Reidel that is now in the old Milford and Major law office building on Jordan Street.
Seward F. replied:
Kenneth Wooster Stub Smith is the name I was searching for. At some point Earl Lynch and his wife ran the place just west of the old PO and maybe it was named lynch's for a period of time before they sold out to Reidel and they may have even continued to work for Reidel for a period of time. I remember as a kid going to Lynch's so I suspect it was named that for awhile.
Kenneth W. replied:
Mea Culpa. I mistook Riedls for Riddlers, thought of them as one and the same, and perhaps led some of you astray. You may wish to re-evaluate some of your responses.
Kenneth W. replied:
Here is something from fultonhistory.com. There is more there, but it is tough to pull out. Most of it seems to be 1952 and 1953. Perhaps it was the Comet after Mrs. Deles sold the business. I do know that I attended a wedding rehearsal dinner at the former Comet in October 1953 when the Limages were running it as the Dutch Kitchen (which was up until then on Jordan Street. I am further confused by an ad for Riedl's on 10/11/1957. That ad says the restaurant was owned by R. F. Morey. The address was given as 44 East Genesee and the telephone was 144, the same as in this 1952 ad.
James L. replied:
@Jean Baker Clark. I remember a Riddler's also. I'm so confused.
Gilda's, a new restaurant in Skaneateles with gourmet pizza, good salads and scrumptious desserts. Nice interior also.
Kim S. replied:
The Pizza Shell!
Kenneth W. replied:
A map of the village from June 1856 shows Fire Company #1 at this site. The land around the building seems to be already filled in. Likewise for the space between this building and the Hecox building where the Eckett addition to that building will later be built, in 1884.
William H. replied:
I always remember the place as being Dutch Spearing's Sport Shop growing up in the 1950's.
Does anyone know the name of the restaurant that was in Mottville on hill where Vinegar/Jordan Rd. connect yrs. ago? It is the 2nd place down from the Mottville church...
