HVAC repair/replace recommendations? Well, I think my 20 year old AC unit has finally had it. Hoping for just a repair, but I might be looking at replacement. Anyone...

No direct experiences with HVAC companies in Raleigh, but I would not sink any money into a 20 year old unit unless its just a capacitor. Many people will tell you they can repair it, but you're sinking money into an asset that has already lasted well past its prime. I'd focus a bit more on replacement.

There's a guy named Justin Woodlief who comes highly recommended on the CIty Data Raleigh board. You can find his contact info by searching there. I think he operates under someone else's HVAC license, but from what I've read he will do an install for a good price. There's a company I will advise against using, and that is Environmental Heating & Air of NC. I sent out for estimates a few years ago for a new outdoor and indoor unit. They were one of the companies to come out and provide an estimate. They emailed the estimate out on a Friday, if I recall correctly, and it went to my spam folder so I didn't see it. They came out the following Monday and installed the system without my permission, even though they typically require a signed acceptance of the quote. I called and told them it was unacceptable, etc, and they acted like it wasn't even a big deal. Pissed me off to no end, and all I could get for the mistake was a 3 year service contract for free. Honestly, I should have told them to remove the system but this was in July and it was hot as shit and my son was an infant at the time. Their failure to understand the magnitude of their mistake really rubbed me the wrong way.

Piggybacking off of this post: My HVAC isn't dead yet (currently at around year 15) but I know it is coming. With new installations in recent years, has anyone seen noticeable differences in say their A/C season power bill after having installed a new unit? I'm curious how much more efficient units have gotten in the last 15-20 years.

I had to replace coils in one of my units about a year ago. These guys were $500 less than anyone else, and they do good work. http://www.pernellinc.com/
