Honestly, maybe check Vulcan museum. They have a pretty solid history of the city, and the influence the steel industry had on it. Maybe also check the museum of art, or even see if city hall has some archives. My guess is a lot of buildings may have their own individual architectural influence that may require going to the building themselves to inquire about. Anyways, anywhere that has history about the city should be a good place. Edit: [Good article](http://blog.al.com/mhuebner/2010/10/michael_fazio_chronicles_birmi.html) on al.com about a guy chronicling the history of Bham architecture. Might be worth checking out his book/the article as well.

See if anyone at Auburn's Urban Studio downtown will talk to you. Literally all they do is study Birmingham's architecture.

Can anyone recommend a b&b in Shrewsbury town centre?

What sort of budget? The Old Post Office is ok but The Prince Rupert is nice. Also a premier inn has just opened in town centre. Have a look on Trip Adviser.
