HOW GAY MEN INFLUENCED AND ISTIGATED HIV/AIDS SUPPORT NETWIORKS AND GROUPS In July 1981; New York and California saw what was believed to be an out break of a rare form on cancer. The first people affected were Gay Men presenting flu like symptoms and Pneumocystis Carni- ( PCP ). The Centre For Disease Control ( CDD ) named this blood born disease as Acquired Immuno Disease Syndrome ( AIDS ). In this first year the world saw 1600 cases of HIV and saw 700 deaths. The First Gay man in the United Kingdom was admitted to the Brompton Hospital London in 1981 suffering from PCP who later died 10 days later. These gentlemen had recently travelled to the USA prompting leading medical researches to consider the premise that this was the man to bring HIV/ADS to the United Kingdom. In 1985 the UK saw the very first self help group set up in London by a small affected and some infected gay men. These groups slowly started to grow on a national scale once again; largely set up by Gay men. This was a pivotal point in the infancy of HIV support groups and one of which Gay Men will always be proud of initiating. As the epidemic developed; the demand for Specialist HIV Hospital Wards became urgent and Princess Diana opened the first specialist ward at Middlesex Hospital. Heterosexuals were reported as ‘The Innocent Victims “ in the eyes of the media and this message implied gay men as “The Guilty Ones”. The media had such an influence on society as its lead to many early diagnostics’ been named Gay Related Immune Disease (GRID ). This had far reaching consequences of our society as this then lead to “The Local Government Act “ being passed which included Clause 28 forbidding the promotion and education of homosexuality all state environments. So it was; through out the World HIV/AIDS support networks started to develop and grow from strength to strength thanks to the gay society coming together in numbers and strength in order to help show support ; empathy; understanding; compassion and understanding. These non judgemental establishments and forward thinking people started educating society in a honest way as opposed to the manic media approach which had previously done so much harm; not only to gay men but to everyone who became infected by HIV/AIDS. Whilst these early years were full of deaths and despair it was the gay community that kept strong and supported “Anyone “ regardless of origin or sexuality who presented themselves at the doors of the HIV support groups; providing emotional and practical support along with the provisions of alternative therapies ; freshly cooked meals ; financial support and benefit advise. One of the most powerful parts of this first class support was pier support; being able to share and discuss our fears and experiences without being judged. The stigma towards HIV/AIDS was so severe that in many cases clients found themselves feeling as if they belonged to an underground private establishment; having to hide and live a double life just to protect their confidentiality. Hate crimes were on the up and societies lack of true facts and understanding created even more difficulties for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. To Summarize; if it wasn’t for the Gay communities through out the world who had the foresight to intervene and offer an alternative form of help in league with the medical profession many people with HIV would have not been provided with the support and care that was desperately needed throughout these dark days. Thankfully; we are still reaping the benefits of this intervention and will continue do so for this essential part of HIV/AIDS support networks. Whilst fighting this battle we can celebrate the intervention of our Gay Society and be truly proud of what we have achieved. In fact we wouldn’t be far from the truth to quote Churchill’s famous words “ Never in the field of Human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” Thanks Lads !
