Martin Motorsports in Alexandria. They primarily work on BMWs and have been honest and forthcoming when I've used them in the past. You often get the owner (Gary) on the phone who is a true enthusiast. They know their stuff and as the name implies, have raced BMWs for many years. If anyone says Curry's Auto, punch them in the dick.

Just got a used car on Craigslist and have used Capitol Hill Auto twice with positive results. I would doubt it is the cheapest end of the spectrum having not done much in the way of getting cost comparisons, but felt they were trustworthy, and they were really convenient to work with. Dropped my car ~7 am, picked up a few days later ~7 am, they have you in/out in no time, didn't miss any work which is worth $$ to me.

I would recommend both without hesitation, but I will say that German Auto Group is on the more expensive side (but still less than a dealer). Both of these shops have taken care of moderately complex repair work on my 2004 VW Jetta (1.8T maintenance-nightmare motor).

Not cheap but very good is Alexandria Bavarian. Just remember cheap and BMW don't mix.

Make sure to get your turn signals checked. I notice that they're usually non-functional on BMWs.

Brakes and an alignment on a BMW are no different than any other car. And the typical parts such as brake rotors and pads are very cheap. Have a search through this thread on bimmerforums.
