Mine are very complicated. Tried doing Turbo tax and it wasn't as easy as it should be. I have a sick child with many medical expenses and my old accountant would deduct every single penny she could. She knew deductions that I didn't even know existed. So I need a very experienced CPA.

Lisa Christopher Ruffes at Beacon is not a CPA. He is an enrolled agent EA just like the people that do taxes at H&R Block. So if you need a CPA please check the credentials first.

Never, in over a dozen years, have I had a problem with Mr. Ruffes. He keeps up on all the tax changes and has always been helpful with any questions you might have. I trust him completely.

I have the same issue. On a lark asked I thumbtack.com about an accountant. I had 4 to 5 accountants reply offering to do individual taxes. I wonder if the issue is we can only find big firms easily online - and we really need to find a small firm with little web/marketing presence. But there is no way to verify these small firms or people replying on thumbtack. I am at a bit of a loss.

One thing most people don't know is that you can write off the CPA expense as professional service. You can also write off advisory fees from a financial advisor and legal advice for a small business. It may help you think twice about what your path should be. It doesn't alway suck to pay a fee especially when dealing with matter involving taxes. money, and legal.

I tried to find a CPA a year or so ago after my other CPA retired on me and there is someone in Cary that quoted me a $300 consultation. It may have been Smith & Smith, or James Kent. Not sure as I never went through with the consultation. I ended up just doing my own taxes because my g/f's family had the highest Turbo Tax edition and gave me one of their keys. Her dad told me that he's been doing his own taxes for years and that other places don't really make much of a difference. I was inclined to believe him because he was a CIO making a good amnt of money and had quite a few investments. The year that I did my own taxes, I actually netted a higher amount of $$ than when I had a pro do my taxes. Not sure if anything in the tax code changed or if my pro was just lazy. My taxes aren't too crazy, but are a bit more than just pay stubs. I have student loans, a home I rent out in another County of NC, and then a home that I actually live in. Either way, I haven't tried to find another pro since doing my own taxes. Seemed to work well for me last time, and I only paid the Fed/State fee to file via Turbo and didn't have to pay a pro to do it. Of course, this is all anecdotal. I could just be a single case. But it's worked for me so far.

I recently went through this. Hiring aCPA was shockingly expensive. Just a consultation was going to be in the $600 range. I talked to a few firms who convinced me that unless I was an international business person with wildly elaborate finance concerns, that H&R Block is fine. They do a good job and personal taxes is their sweet spot.
