Anyone have a contractor that they recommend for a home energy audit to take advantage of NYSERDA incentives for energy efficiency? I am in Olean. I see on their list...
Marilyn S. replied:
I had one when I got my geothermal heating installed. It definitely requires an on-site visit do to the physical tests they perform. You can call my cousin, Jim, who installs the geothermal systems and get a recommendation from him. You can reach him at his business 945-0354.

1 other suggestion google home inspectors, find 1-2 that serve your area routinely, they will be able to offer specific contractor reference as long as you make it clear for energy audit. also if your gas utility is national fuel they will provide a free energy audit involving gas heat furnaces boilers hotwater heaters etc. Ditto for your electric utility provider maybe start there they have free programs at least for inspections and audits if they will leave you with copies of the results i.e. heat loss etc or efficiencies of furnace etc, this is all good info you can share with contractors of your choice...All I can add is furnace and or boiler efficiencies are key insulation depth in attic is huge, , roof needs proper ventialation at eaves at soffitt materials or by peak or gable end venting combo of both, actually air in attic above the insulation should be same as ambient out door temps. cause air movement in and out / air exchange is key to prevent ice damming and moisture buildup in attic. next is drafts, if there is air infiltration/ drafts heated air is cooled far too quickly and hence costs to heat and comfort level decreases proportionately. Godd thermal windows are huge in reducing draft and holding heat in and they are rather affordable but again there get at least 3 quotes with detail and r value warranty etc. a few cos out there cahrage a fortune abd only very slightly better than the lower tier, insulated with proper air space and gasketing and proper install get the same result. any basement windows draftty, go with glass bock or just seal caulk or foam spray caulk if big gaps in wood...I owned and operated a roofing busines for years and am handy but no way purport to be a carpenter but do all but electrical work in our home. if I can be of any further assistnace just call me Kathy, consider me a new friend I just like helping people if I can , nothing more implied by my long winded assist here $$$ is real we only have so much I just want to see you get your $'s worth in long term value... take care...home ph 716.627.2324, if needed cell 716.713.7553.

My cousin Jim works with NYSERDA contractors and can point you in right direction for the energy audit. The AC in summer is also a big perk with the geothermal.
