I had a cheap "on the side" mechanic try and fix my car and ended up making things worse as he didn't have the proper tools, which ended up costing me more money than if I had just taken it to a mechanic in the first place. Unless it's something very minor like an oil change or something, I'll never do that again. I started a thread here asking for a good mechanic also. Ended up taking it to Collins Auto as it's right next to me and many recommended them. Rick seems to be a great, reasonable mechanic.
