Alright everyone... for better or worse, my exit is fairly eminent. Does anyone know of bike shops that will assist in packing/shipping bicycles?

Not sure where you're headed, but if there's an Amtrak station nearby I highly recommend their shipping services. They have these giant bike boxes that let you roll the bike right in (sans pedals; stem/bars rotated). Since the box is so large, they sort of have to handle it with care - nobody's going to carelessly toss one of those onto a conveyor belt. It's cheaper than any other disassembled option, and pretty darn quick. The combination of minimal breakdown, low cost, and handling with care make Amtrak my #1 choice when possible.

Don't go.

Any bike shop should do it. Bicycle Habitat will do a good job for $50.

Honestly, you're better off doing it yourself. Go to mytenspeeds.com and read his section on packing and shipping bikes. Yes, it's the ugliest website ever, but the info is useful. You'll need to get a box from a bike shop, but they'll usually give them away. If they want you to pay, just go to another shop.

I left NYC a few months ago with a road bike and a hybrid. Called around to various shops asking for quotes for breaking down a bike + packing, the cheapest (and closest to me!) turned out to be ModSquad in Harlem for about $60 each. They have daily UPS/FedEx pickups, so I printed a label beforehand and gave it to them. I was also able to drop in a bundle of clothing into the box w/o charge. Both bikes arrived in California in perfect condition, have been enjoying the winter riding out here thoroughly!
