I chose a midwife because I care how I birth. I wanted a down to earth pregnancy and delivery that didn't feel like a medical emergency. My midwife Kimberly at Prarie Midwives was amazing, she is leaving to BC but the practice has other midwives. Call early! There are not enough midwives in Canada, it is very hard to get in. If you have a normal delivery and are not a high risk pregnancy, there is no reason you cannot be seen by a midwife. . They are birth professionals =)

I had my son in January with Prairie Midwives, they were amazing!! I had Kimberely for my prenatal care but due to an injury Melissa was at my delivery with Jenn being the second midwife. All 3 were so fantastic! It was an awesome experience for me. However most midwives do not actually provide pain medications.

Lindsay Garrett Nylander is right, the midwives here actually don't give anything. I learned something today too ;)
I tried to get a midwife for my pregnancy, I was put on a wait list... Contact them as soon as you know you are pregnant! I was never able to get in with one. From what I've heard Red Deer area is down a few midwives one is on mat leave and one is moving away. If you are unable to get on with a midwife I would highly recommend getting on with the Horizon prenatal team! They have AWESOME doctors!
