Yesitsmear - your point is a fair one. Your own proficiency, going off your post, is very high indeed. I think creative writing isn't necessarily a great example to place next to translation though, or not. It depends on the translation. For me, the trouble is that anyone can self-certify. It's worth looking at even José Mourinho himself. He's nicknamed 'The Interpreter' (or some use the incorrect 'Translator') and yes, he did interpret for Bobby Robson. He is extremely fluent and eloquent but I do hear him use wrong words - one is where PT speakers mix up 'confidence' and 'trust' because they don't all always know exactly when to say which. Seems nothing but a native speaker knows << exactly >> when to say one or the other. The reason that is a quite telling difference is that if it's like that in normal speech, some technical, legal (or whatever) place even higher demands. I don't know you and am making no judgment because it isn't my place. But the trouble is that loads of people self-certify as competent to translate out of their native language simply because it suits them to … but they just aren't good enough. So it's for that reason it'd be far preferable if everyone did what I do and just accepts work into their language to stay on the safe side. But, of course, money changes everything.

I tried several others and the quotations varied pretty wildly, yet all of them said they'd based the quote on an official rate...
