Please visit and "like" the page for the new ACAC in Texarkana. It is a whole new world for the area shelter, and we all need to pitch in and support it!...
Connie C. replied:
Polly, both cities contribute but it's not enough. And in the Texarkana, AR budget, I am told that the ACAC is not a categorical line item expenditure. For example., there is no line item for pet food. So for years, the shelter has solicited food from businesses and individuals. But there was no secure place to store it, so the stacks of food have been ruined by rats. It has made the animals very, very sick. The director resigned over a week ago, under great pressure. Now there is a committee running the ACAC. It is made up of concerned citizens, appointed by the city manager. We as a community must unite to make their efforts to turn the shelter around a success. I have been guilty in the past of finger-pointing. But it is a whole new day, and new people are in charge. They deserve our support and so do the animals. I am a dog-person, but I love cats too, and I am proud to be a member of SCAT. I am hoping that the new leadership at the shelter will be receptive to SCAT's concerns. Our leader, Jan Needham Price has shared a list with the powers-that-be. This will be a quid pro quo, I understand that. As members of the "cat community", we must support this shelter.
