Thre are tons of great campgrounds. I believe you can reserve the USFS ones ahead of time, as well as those at Donner Lake (those are through CA state parks). The Donner Lake campground has great facilities including showers. They are all very popular so definitely reserve ahead of time. And.. it is probably cheaper to rent a car because transportation to and from the Reno airport is expensive.

Burbank, North Hollywood, Studio City are all fairly close and you can find decent/good hotels. The Hollywood Bowl usually has a shuttle from that side of the 101 as well, check the website for locations. Used to live there quite a while ago
