You would have to put up a support frame but Cross Vine is very fast growing and is evergreen. If you put up sunflowers they will be magnificent--for a while. It depends on what part of town you live for something like Tacoma. Last winter was relatively mild but the year before my Tacoma froze to the ground. I am near Pantano wash so it gets chilly. Cross Vine is also fairly hardy . I bought four of them from Harlows. Completely covers a pergola.
This is my vine it grows fast. we got it at Green Things.

Ground is best. Always. Low water... Fast. Az rosewood. Pretty. Arabian lilac Bells... Yellow red or orange. Morning glory trees. Not as fast. Twisted myrtle. A bit slow. Clean. Pomegranate... Loses leaves. But.. Edible Desert bird of paradise. Kinda slow. Mexican bird or paradise / evergreen.. Hops. Green or purple. Guyacam.. Blue flowers. Tropical... Suagr cane... Clean. Citrus.. Lemons are fast. Lisbon for sure. Sunflowers... Temporary.. Good to mix with other plants that are slower. Barbados cherry.. Edible but slow. Pretty!
