We were just in Clearwater two weeks ago. We stayed at Clearwater Beach Hotel (got it on Groupon) and it was pretty bad. We actually talked to them about getting out of the contract so we could stay elsewhere. They transferred us across the street to the other portion of the property to the suites and those were pretty nice. Great location, just across the street from the beach. We've also stayed at the Hilton at Clearwater and it's nice, but significantly more money.

We just moved back from the gulf coast in a Florida. I would recommend Destin! http://www.visitflorida.com/en-us/cities/destin.html

I highly recommend Marco Island. They have timeshares you can rent that are on the beach. If you want a low key relaxing vacation, Marco is perfect.

JW Marriott at Marco Island. The Hilton Vacation Club at Marco is also very nice but is under going renovations right now.

Marco Island is beautiful. I rented a luxury home last year for my entire family. We had our own pool and the house was right on the inlet. It was affordable. We rented with Marco Escapes and they were great. The house is called Bongo Bay and you can google it. We had 7 adults and 1 child. It was way cheaper than renting 4 rooms at a resort. Good luck.

Have you thought about renting a home, it’s actually just as reasonable as a hotel and you have the luxury of feeling like you’re at home while you’re away. My family owns a vacation rental company called Allure Vacation Rentals we are based in SWFL. We have luxury condos and homes for rent all along the gulf coast. www.allurevacationrentals.com
