I've probably seen every band that plays in Ubud and my favorite by far is Kacir Dunia Ketiga who play at Laughing Buddha on Wednesday nights. They are really one of the few that look like they are having fun up there. True musicians with quite a few original songs. I don't know how to contact them but you should check them out.

I have local friends who pay 500,000 Rp ($39 USD) per month for a room in Ubud center (near a yoga studio) which is the price of 4-5 yoga classes in this town. In most cases, really cheap means squat toilet, no hot water, no internet, potential mold, and a very used mattress on the floor. If you are talking really cheap and western, I am not sure that exists exactly, but unsure of what really cheap means to you. Anything else in Ubud center will probably be at least 6 times that price for just a room, if not 10 times, as it is a tourist area. I doubt you are going to find anyone to exchange with as there are far too many people in this town who believe they have something unique to give back, but ultimately want something for free out of the deal. Unless you can withdrawal big heart credits from the ATM in the form of Rupiah, I am not sure it will get you anywhere. If you're just trying to get something reasonable for a low price, however, that can be done. I rented what I consider to be a cheap place in Sayan (just beyond Penestanan, a 10 minute drive to Ubud center), for 1,000,000 Rp ($78 USD) per month for a while (Kos Accommodation in Sayan Kutuh via Ubud Bali) though I paid 6 months at one time, so the month-to-month price will be slightly higher... it was clean, had a western toilet, a new bed (not on the floor), other new furnishings, and a shared kitchen... still no hot water and no internet. it was a several minute drive to any yoga studios, however, not really walking distance (unsure also of what you mean by close, because close for walking and close for driving are two different things).

LoL Bar, Bamboo Bar, CP Lounge, XL Lounge, Laughing Buddha - all have great live bands. Griya Faria are my favourite for reggae or, for rock/blues, Abu Band, Cool Tone, Unbroken, Ronald Gang, etc etc... there's so much choice of great music in Ubud. Open mic nights at Bar Luna (Weds), the Onion or at Bali Bohemia, which is in Nyuh Kuning on Thurs

Griya Fariya is one of the best I've listened to, so full of life:), Ubud 40 (not sure of the name ) are also a good band ... XL lounge, and Napi Orti are my best place for bands .
