Rinaldis Bella Napoli in Kenilworth... Private, inexpensive, food is awesome, and its byob so you bring alcohol the night before and they set up a bar for you. Its awesome, ask for Ronnie!!

I researched quite a few for my husband's surprise party this past winter. Before I make my suggestion. Some questions are: about how many people, what kind of food and what time of day, afternoon or evening and if you want BYOB or not. Some places that don't have a private room, will actually let you be the only party at the place if it is not in the evening. I wound up going semi-private at Mario's Tutto Bene. As I only had 30 people, I agreed to a divider in the room between us and a few other people in the room and was very pleased. The Garrafolo family out did themselves. They worked with me on the food and set up my decorations for me. I had sit down as opposed to buffet and requested family style so everyone could taste everything. I also have had some great private parties at Galloping Hill Caterers. Some of the other places that I checked into were Sofia's in Springfield, (not private unless daytime) Il Gabbiano in Cranford (private daytime only), La Griglia in Kenilworth, Triestina Ristorante in Cranford, Costa's in Roselle Park, The Red Knot at the Galloping Hill Golf Course, I also recommend, Libretti's in Orange in good as well. There are also some other great restaurants in Millburn that could work. Some of these were BYOB and others were not.
