Based on our 25+ years of experience, I would say avoid Russell and Vince Hee. We've had good luck with Apple Roofing and we have a Spanish tile roof.

Highly recommend South Hills Builders. They are pricey but do an excellent job. My neighbors did a cheap shady guy and it ended up being a disaster, roofs are one place I don't cheap out.

Have you explored getting someone through a major box store that will guarantee the contractor and provide a parts/labor warranty? You can usually get a pretty good rate if you wait for one of their 10-20% off deals and might even be able to defer payment for a year with an in-house credit card deal.

Depending on what municipality you live in, the contractor will probably have to have insurance and a builders permit. So, hopefully that will weed out the real jagoffs.

I have had great results from angieslist.com (fee for membership) and homeadvisor.com (free) when hiring contractors. I would call a few different places and ask them to come give you a quote. A face-to-face meeting, even a brief one, can help a LOT with eliminating the obvious dolts.
