Why did I take my van to the dealership? They want $60 to check the electrical system and then $150 to put in a new battery - IF that is the problem. Does someone know...

What, they didn't try to sell you a new car? (yet?) I used cartalk.com to search for a mechanic down here and have been happy. From the main page of their site, click the link for Mechanics files, then you can put in a city and state to see what comes up. Watch out for how old the reviews are tho, Cartalk went off-air in 2012, and some of the reviews go back 10+ years.

KCM Auto Care on Cunningham ((217) 384-3055) is excellent. I want to say that they provide efficient service at decent prices, but that just makes me sound like a schmuck (or a shill). I will add, however, that they saved me 250 dollars on unnecessary charges (as compared to 1-2 other mechanics that I went to) when I had to get my brakes replaced.

Peter B's is the best place in the area, but they're a bit pricey. They're the only ones I trust for doing work on nicer cars when I don't have the equipment to do it myself.

Depending on what you need done, Beaumont (just off Prospect near the Putt-Putt) was where I used to take my car (and where my dad still takes his, as far as I know). Admittedly, I haven't done that since I moved here two years ago, but I never had a problem with them.
So my car's break problem has been fixed properly, and for a really reasonable price by a great, new mechanic! Thanks, Mike's Brakes and More (721-2785)! I would...
