Definitely recommend the [Carpe Noctem] hostel in Budapest. Really close knit and they organize events everyday + night. (http://budapestpartyhostels.com/pages/index.php?cont=zero)

The Grand Budapest used to be really wonderful, but nowadays it's just a remnant of past glory

If you're looking to meet lots of people and go out with your hostel mates every night I would check out Hi Five Hostel in Budapest. The people who work there do a nice job of organizing events every night.

Depends what you're looking for! Hostelworld.com is good as there are tons of reviews and price comparisons, but I'd say if you're getting a private room anyway you avoid most of the potential hostel horror stories (not being able to sleep because of partyers, loud snoring people, etc.). That said for Budapest I liked the Mandala hostel (nice atmosphere and workers) and also the Zen Hostel (great owner, super small and cozy), and I didn't really like the one called "Hipster Hostel". I always prefer smaller hostels, not in a huge partying space at the moment, so each of these places just had one private room, I believe.
Tips, go on one of those caving tours in Buda, was super fun! Of course the baths are also great. Naschmarkt in Vienna is great to release the foodie in all of us...

Last year I stayed in Carpe Noctem Vitae. It was the least crazy of the 4 sister party hostels. The staff are amazing and make you feel at home. While I was there they opened a new floor of private rooms and they are quite nice! The staff take you out nightly. My favorite was the booze cruise on the Danube. It was a blast. Best hostel ever!

For Vienna, I would really recommend Wombats. They have three or so locations in Vienna, and I stayed at the Base. I would personally recommend the one by Naschmarkt because (a) it's near the free tour stop, (b) closest to the rail, and (c) closest to the heart of the city. When I was in Vienna a few summers ago, I ended up seeing a free Schubert concert, took the bombest nap in the big park at the center of the city, and drank some of the best coffee I've tasted. Check out the visitor center because there's a lot of cool stuff there.

I was in Budapest last year and I stayed at the Guru Hostel (on hostelworld), pretty cheap compared to the options at the time, I believe we payed $7 a night each in October. We didn't stay in a private room but the female dorm and mixed dorms (we were moved as we stayed a few extra days) were clean, no one was particularly noisy, bathrooms were clean and large, there were lockers to rent and there was a little space to cook anytime you need to (sparse but useful). The employees were friendly and the owner dropped by to check in and he was equally as nice.
The location was GREAT and its an old converted flat in a cute little building. Close to A LOT of food options, museums, historic buildings and the road its on is beautiful in itself. Down the street is some nice shopping if you're so inclined and there's a club directly across the street - we didn't go but the amateur basketball players we met at the hostel sure liked it. All in all it was a really good experience for a last minute booking, we were sick and needed a place to be antisocial as we usually CS.
Have fun, enjoy Budapest, its honestly one of my favorite cities in the world, be sure to check out Kerepesi Cemetery, the Szimpla farmers market and eat some Lángos for me.

I stayed in Hostel Goodmo in Budapest & loved it. We got a free meal the first night, reasonably near most things, and a nice straight line walk back from Szimpla ruin bar. Aside from the bar (definitely recommended, they make brilliant mojitos), go to the baths and up to liberty tower as well for a great view. I was only in Vienna for a few hours so can't recommend a hostel but definitely go to Naschmarkt, I could have spent forever wandering around there.

I recommend Grand Backpack King in Budapest. Private two person room was cheap and nice. Good location. Not big, or a real party hostel while I was there.
Hi there! I'm going to Salzburg with friends at this weekend. Do you know any good and cheap hostel there which you can recommend? Thanks in advance! ;]
