If your unit is old, seriously consider replacing it now. Why? The government (can't remember if EPA or HUD, etc.) this spring mandated that all new AC systems meet the SEER 14 efficiency requirement. This will involve replacing both your inside AC unit and your outside unit at the same time, rather than replacing one or the other which has commonly been what homeowners have needed to do and was one large bite out of the pocketbook at a time. So SEER 14 equipment will be a really big bite Some HVAC and plumbing companies have stockpiled SEER 13 units which can be installed until the supply runs out; the supply might get the companies through the summer but probably not into next year. Of course, if the improved SEER 14 efficiency is worth its additional cost and benefits in your opinion, you may want to go with a SEER 14 unit anyway, whether next year or now. I'm a real estate agent, not an HVAC expert; but I am passing along what I'm hearing. Check with your preferred HVAC contractor(s).
