I always went to Newport Rentals on Olive, and rented their professional carpet cleaning machine. They have some products, too, that will help lift stains out, but only as long as you saturate the padding underneath first. One of their best products was/is UrineAte, which one uses before using the cleaning product itself. I had several teenagers and a house full of pets, and we used this twice a year to keep the carpet looking good, and it worked.
