Hi i am looking for input on a singer 771 sewing machine. i am looking to sew leather. Are they worth $400?
Tryzz S. replied:
I have tried for too many years to find a domestic sewing machine that would sew leather properly. I got into leather sewing a year ago after desiding to buy an industrial machine, because I really wanted to persue making things with leather. I am now happily sewing with leather. P.S. I also had a new Servo motor put on it to control the bloody speed of it and noise. http://vssmb.blogspot.ca/2012/04/difference-between-domestic-industrial.html
Cindy P. replied:
David Mannock - even if you produce new dependable gears, I doubt that any later T&S (620 or higher) is worth it. I took two I got for nothing (when I was a newbie) to my OSMG - both needed timing belts which are not expensive but he showed me what had to come off to get at and replace them and then, as he said, "You'll still have a piece of junk machine!" I took both back to my car as parts machines and hauled in my Great Aunt's Viking 21 - "NOW you're talking!!" was his response!

VSM friends, I think I've read about a machine that can handle heavy duty sewing, specifically leather (not the larger commercial versions).
Suggestions please?
Thanks!

Using the right machine for the job is very important. If you are looking for regular use of leather, you need the machine that was designed to sew through that kind of leather. Heavy leather, you'll want a Singer 29 made for the job. http://vssmb.blogspot.com/2012/04/difference-between-domestic-industrial.html

Great. The Serial number is on the machine. I got it off the picture. Will go to the site you mentioned. Thank you. Lisa Fraser
Ivana F. replied:
That is a Singer 66 with Red Eye decals, Judee. This is a domestic machine, not really designed for sewing leather - it might be able to handle it, but you'll burn the motor quickly and possibly damage the machine itself. You might want to look into buying an industrial or cobbler machine for constant use with leather. That said, the 66 is an excellent, easy to use and service straight stitch machine and that's not a bad price for it, depending on accessories and cabinet.
