when we had the same problem it turned out that water had gotten into the breaker box. All of the circuits on one side of the box went out (even though the individual breakers didn't "pop") so half of the circuits in the house were out. Newington Electric made an emergency call at night - discovered the problem and we scheduled a service call during normal hours. They replaced our entire service - the old box had been poorly installed and was a rat's nest of wires. But, because the kitchen circuits were on the bad side of the box, the service tech took the entire breaker for the refrigerator from the bad side and put it in a spare slot on the good side, so at least our refrigerator would keep running over night.
