Susan G. replied:
Not sure about travel agents. I usually check VacationsToGo.com (we have used them before) and then call NCL directly. Typically same price, but then I book directly with cruise line; sometimes we actually get better benefits that way.

Jeff M. Bauman - oversold situations are not upgrades..it is the cl padding an offer to get people to move to another sailing. These offers are always very nice.. They do not happen on all cruiselines but Holland is big on it as is Regent. Some of these offers to my clients have made my eyes bug out (esp. As most are for international routes so clients have air involved and the cl knows that...). But the cl is in a pickle on an oversold ship....and they have to offer something big to get people to,change their travel plans and move to a different sailing. They do not bump clients, they just make really good offers to get clients to bite and move to another sailing

Nadine G. replied:
I am a frequent cruiser and I have booked with the cruise ship company, Vacationstogo.com, and a travel agent. Sometimes the cruiseship will send you promotions that are so affordable that you end up traveling for pennies... the same is also true for vacations.go...My family of 4 did a 10 day Mediterranean on the NCL Epic for Spring break and the American Express travel agent whom we booked not only gave us a much better rate, she threw in unlimited drinks for all of us, an upgrate in the cabin, a credit towards our excursion, and 2 dinner in the specialized restaurant...Yes while the price of the cruise was only 300 dollars less than what the cruiseship was offering on that day, the upgrades we got were worth so much more...so yes do your homework but don't write the travel agent off...there are times where you get a much better deal especially when traveling during peak seasons.
Luis M. replied:
Check cruise.com, sometimes they have better promotions.
Ivy G. replied:
I have to disagree with Jeff M. Bauman. I have been a cruise travel agent for 20 years and work very hard for my clients, often reducing rates after deposit and before they sail. We sometimes also have groups at lower rates than you can currently purchase. If you use an experienced agent they will work hard to get you the best price. I will say the cruise lines change their promotions so often that sometimes previously booked passengers cannot take advantage of the new promotional rates. In my opinion it is always to your advantage as a passenger to use an agent and not rely only on a cruise line employee sitting in a call center who never has been on a cruise.
Jeff B. replied:
With all due respect, you have a dog in the race ;) My ex was an agent for Gold Coast Cruises, one of the biggest earlier consolidators. My aunt was an agent with Liberty Travel. There was a time. But in recent years, I can go site to site and see the exact same rates. I am in the frequent cruise clubs, so I get those promos in my email constantly. I know your biz is rough these days. You have a place, for people who would like to leave the research to others. For those of us who cruise often, we can do it ourselves. Sort of like some folk need a personal trainer, but after a few years of exercise, we can do it ourselves.

If you have a Costco membership, book through them. We saved on the cruise itself, and then got a nice Costco gift card after our return. The cabins we wanted were not available online at Costco.com, but I called and they were able to get exactly what we wanted!
