If you want a seamstress to make a dress from scratch then you are probably looking at that kind of money - well certainly to do a good job - anything made to measure is going to cost more than production line garments which are usually made overseas. The time alone to make a dress (and any good seamstress would make a toile up first) is going to cost and then there is the fabric costs which can spiral out of control - the cost of decent fabric is sometimes silly money! I usually charge £150 plus fabric costs to make a dress and the time taken, consultations, fitting times, etc etc, still makes me only working at just above minimum wage. Yes I could make a dress for a lot less, using rubbish quality fabric - but a) the bride wouldn't be happy and b) the quality would be like that of the Great British Sewing Bee!. You may be better off buying a dress from a reputable E-bay site and have it altered if you are on a tight budget. Anything custom made will be dearer - hope this helps - Sue Tye Dressed To Impress x
