Any advice? Would love to visit Barron Canyon via canoe. However, Achray is all booked up. We have an 8 hour trip to get to that part of the park; any ideas of where to...

Try Sec Lake area. Good luck.
Chris J. replied:
Algonquin Portage has single rooms at a reasonable rate OR a grass field with group style covered campfire pit behind their store. (Pay camping, but a reasonable rate.) I've never seen any more than 2 tents setup there, so there is a good chance you'll be the only people there. You can also buy breakfast there or use the showers.

Have you looked at the backcountry sites titled Achray Jump off? They have a group of sites there that you can book as backcountry, but drive up to. Especially for this kind of thing, where people get a late start. I just double checked for this saturday night, for example, and 4 of 9 sites are still free. We're doing the same thing at Brent in a couple weeks because we will be getting up too late to go on the water. You can book them just like you would a normal backcountry site. http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/camping/jump-off-campsites.php

I recommend starting at Achray/Grand Lake, St Andrews L or Stratton L for a couple nights to explore the water slide area, then if you want to see Barron Canyon from a canoe follow Highfalls L through the Cascades to the Barron Canyon and book you last night at a site on the Lower Barron River. Then if you use an outfitter to shuttle you vehicle to Squirrel Rapids parking lot, you'll just have a short trip and one portage in the morning of your last day and you will be at your vehicle.

Pam, follow this link for a video of a trip I did in that area in 2013: http://youtu.be/o1 pRCBa6IiY

Where is the best place to tent camp at Algonquin where you can rent a canoe for fishing, for 2 campers?
The P. replied:
Carman - Some local outfitters will deliver canoes to organized campgrounds in Algonquin Park or you can transport your own rental canoe. Either way you can find a service provider who rents canoes at http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/services/advertisers-map-and-database.php and use the search term "outfitter" or "canoe". If you would like to compare Algonquin's developed campgrounds see http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/camping/developed-campgrounds-compare.php
Maybe someone could help. We are looking for a place to camp ( tent ) yet have some access to lakes via a small motorboat for fishing. We do NOT want the "popular"...
The P. replied:
Andrew W McNee - Most lakes in Algonquin Park do not permit the use of motorboats. Based upon your criteria you will want to check what lakes permit the use of motorboats of different horsepower ratings and which ones offer backcountry camping. See http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/park_management/motor-restrictions.php and http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/virtual/canoe_routes_map/index.php Have a great trip!

I wondered if anyone has a recommendation for me regarding ranger cabins. My husband and I are looking for the best cabin choice for a cabin that is not accessible by...
The P. replied:
Pamela Paine - Excluding "drive to" Ranger Cabins in Algonquin Park, you would be looking at the following rustic Ranger Cabins (http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/camping/ranger-cabins.php) about a day's paddle into the backcountry. This day's paddle would of course depend upon your skill level, but for average canoeists the following cabins could be reached - Big Crow, Kitty, McKaskill, Tattler, and Wenda. Some of these cabins such as Big Crow and Tattler, can be 'made closer' by hiring a water taxi from the Lake Opeongo Access Point. This boat, with roof racks for canoes, can move you to any portage on Lake Opeongo cutting out a day of paddle from your trip. As for specifics on which cabin is best, read the descriptions and history of each cabin at http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/camping/ranger-cabins.php If you need more information please don't hesitate to ask or you may give the Park Information Office a phone call at 705 633-5572 and they can help plan your next Algonquin Park backcountry trip.
