Majority of used car lots are no good. Find a car on Facebook that is still being daily driven and have it brought to a mechanic to be checked out

Carfax has a lot of used vehicles listed, can search for what you want. Carmax treated me pretty well also.

I bought my car 2 years ago from CarMax. I wasn’t in a big hurry so I took my time looking through their website. I pretty much knew what I wanted, and after several days, I saw a “new arrival” and it was exactly what I was looking for! But it was in Fort Worth. I put a hold on it, and for $199 they shipped it to the BR store. After it arrived 2 days later I checked it out, did a test drive, and it was perfect. Being a Texas car it had never seen road salt and was in pristine condition, plus it had every available option. Sure I paid a little more, but I got exactly what I wanted.

I recommend www.vroom.com They are in Texas but they deliver. Best part is they use the no haggle/no negotiation model of car sales. No sales tactics. No up sales. Just buy what you want on line and have it delivered or pick it up in person. I bought a car from them and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I reserved it online then went to Dallas to test drive it and finalize the purchase. If you don't want to buy something in Texas online then Carmax is the next best option. However, they are consistently more expensive than Vroom.

The used car market is insanely overinflated right now. I work in auto finance and we're selling some 3 year old used cars at auction for more than their new MSRP. Terrible time to buy a used car and probably will be for the next several months. That being said, use [truecar.com](https://truecar.com) to preshop and consider an online only retailer like [carvana.com](https://carvana.com) or vroom.com.

Shadetree mechanic here I'd recommend against buying from a used car dealership. It will almost always be cheaper to buy from an individual An individual is looking to get rid of a vehicle, while a dealership is looking to make profit from the vehicle. You have a lot more negotiation power with the individual.

Never used it myself but if you want to try something a little different check out Carvana.com. It’s basically an Amazon but for cars. You search for the car you want and they deliver it to your door. They give you 7 days to test drive it, if you don’t like it they will come back to pick it up and 100% refund you. No haggling though, but it seems like a lot of people like that you don’t have to deal with a pushy salesperson. It might be worth looking into!

I would avoid dealers. Dealers make the most profit (by far) on used cars. They can make 4000-5000 profit on a used car, compared to a few hundred on a new cars. So that used Honda accord they are selling for 12,995 they might have taken in on trade in for 8,000. Of course they will never tell you this. I don't know why, but making an obcene profit offends me. Your best bet is a used car with verifiable service history.

I have two don’t recommends 1. Star Toyota (they may be named something else now, it’s the one on 45 in League City). Incredibly rude. We walked in, knew what we wanted & wanted to pay cash. They wanted us to finance, said the Prius was in high demand & they didn’t have to sell it to us. We went down the road to the Toyota dealership in Dickinson & were out in a hour with a new Prius. Sadly, they didn’t reopen after Harvey I think. 2. Norman Frede A. Bought a used car when I was in high school. Cute little Saturn “sports car”. Yea, it had weed in it still. Didn’t realize that one until the drug dogs sniffed it out a week later. Thankfully the cop believed me & I was able to show proof that we had just bought the car. Still had to serve ISS. B. 15 years later it’s now time for a mini van & I decide to give them another chance. A lot can change in 15 years right? Nope. They showed me a fake Carfax report (that’s when I learned to pull them myself). I found out after someone had hit our van when we asked for the diminished value. It had been a major accident before, in Massachusetts! My husband got a great deal on a Nissan Rouge at Carmax, I have heard some horror stories. They gave us more than what the van that had now been in 2 accidents was worth & he didn’t have to pay much extra for the Rouge that had a clean report (we learned) is fully loaded, low mileage & at the time 3 years old. Whatever you get, I highly recommend taking it over to Tony & John at Autocheck to look over first before you sign anything. They’re hands down the best mechanics in the area. If I moved out of Clear Lake I would still go to them.

I don’t have a new car dealer recommendation, but I suggest you check out Carvana.com, the one with the car vending machine, for good used cars. All vehicles they sell go through a 150 point inspection and are reconditioned. You get a 7-day test-own period during which you can return it for any reason. You can either pick up your car at the vending machine on Katy Freeway or have it delivered to you.

Do NOT go to a used car dealer. The only time you should ever buy from a dealer is if you are buying a new car or a certified pre-owned car. Buy private party. Get the car checked out by a trusted mechanic **before** buying it. I don't mean a Firestone/Goodyear/NTB place - go to a reputable independent mechanic. What are you looking for, and how much do you want to spend?
Jackieirish replied:
If you can afford their prices, CarMax is the most respectable of the lot. They're a big business, so if you have a problem at least there is the possibility that you can have it addressed. The downside is the aforementioned prices. You are almost* guaranteed to pay more there than at other places. But the cars are good quality. *I say almost guaranteed because just about every other dealer will promise to beat the CarMax price for a similar vehicle. But as every used vehicle is different, you can't always compare vehicles from one lot to another. Plus, there are plenty of other ways dealers can hose you while still giving you a 'low' price, so the final price ma not even matter anyway.
hockeylovinguy replied:
I absolutely loved Carvana.com and they will deliver or you can pick it up near Octane Coffee. They have a 7 day test drive. If you don't like it just take it back. If you find something you are interested in PM me and I can give you a code for $500 off.

If you can I would hold off buying a used car for the next couple of months. The used car supply is lower than ever and used car prices are historically high. As unemployment expires/lowers, it is believed that cars will be repossessed and leased vehicles will be returned so prices should drop.

I personally would look for an old Camry from around the early 00s. They can run forever if they are well cared for. Parts are plentiful because there are so many of them and they are normally pretty easy to work on unless you get a gotcha issue.
Check for leaks especially with the seals on the passenger side of the engine, rust, check the transmission dip stick for any particles of metal, check the oil. check the suspension by rocking it a bit. Check the spare for wear. If you take your time and learn how to inspect a car for issues you can find really good private party deals on cars that will always beat a dealer's price.
I've linked the first in a series of videos on how to inspect a car. You should always inspect every used car regardless of where you get it. It's really not that hard and takes about 20 minutes.
