There's a guy on here who does them for $25. There's another guy who I know charges more than $500. He's probably not the most expensive. I do a simple quick headshot at my location for $75. If you want more pictures or outfit changes, my sitting fee and six pictures (suitable for submissions or a comp card) is $250. Many photographers will figure out a package if what you want isn't what they offer as a standard. I'd find someone whose work you like and ask if they can do X for Y amount of money. You can see my work at http://maryelle-stclare.com.

I am new to photography and recently purchase a Canon T5i for my first. Can any one recommend a good multi-purpose lens? I can't stand switching lenses. Thank you.

Sony RX100
Scott G. replied:
Seriously Karen, forget SLR's and lenses and get one of the new large sensor super zooms. They have 28-200 mm zoom ranges at F2.8. And you do not have to stop to change lenses. You will save money and have everything you need to shoot great pics and video. Sony RX10 is 999$ roughly 2000$ cheaper than equivalent lenses.

Bring lots of batteries! The cold does a number on them. Some good gloves, and a waterproof backpack would be on my list as well! Oh, and a tripod too!

keep you and your batteries warm, keep an eye on spaceweather.com and aurora-service.org for the levels and likelihood of auroras where you are, wide angle fast lens, enjoy :)
marhave replied:
I don't know about tours, but if Alaska has its own subreddit you could always ask around if maybe a local photographer could show you around without it being a tour. I know if you ever came to my part of the world I wouldn't mind helping out, showing my local spots.
As for the technique, my local photo club teaches this basic for beginners, adjust as needed:
- wb 4000 kelvin.
- shutter of about 10 second (longer and you might miss details in the aurora).
- a nice wide aperture, 2.8-3.5.
- adjust iso as needed.
- use manual focus and if you have any stabiliser of any kind on your lens, turn it off.
I'm not an expert northern lights photographer at all, this is just what my club shared with me, more experienced photographers probably have some better advice for you.
Also, pack some of those hand/toe warmers (rechargeable or one-time use) to attach to lens/camera/help keep your many batteries warm.

I've heard [Ronn Murray's](http://www.ronnmurrayphoto.com/NorthernLightsTours/TourOptions/Winter-Aurora-Alaska) workshops are great. The photos he and his wife take are phenomenal. It might be worth to check out.
