Build your own cabinets. It's not very hard and they'll be superior to the cheapest cabinets you can find. I just tore down some crap hand built cabinets in my kitchen from the 70s - if they hadn't have finished it with faux wood laminate it wouldn't have looked half bad. Best part about building in cabinets is that there won't be big gaps - if you're trying to get used cabinets, they'll all be the wrong size for your kitchen. For the countertop, just do a tile contertop: http://www.boyertile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/kitchen-counter012.jpg If done right, they don't look bad and even buying new tiles from home depot, you can get under $1/sq foot (which for the size of a countertop is nothing).

Been awhile since I've done property rennovations, however... totally agree buying used from ReStore locations in the ares, plus used found elsewhere worthwhile. A few times bought demo cabinet sets from HD and others when they changed displays at stores. Found good deals at [Building 9](http://www.building9.biz/) on closeout and surplus items as well.
