Where can I go to adopt a dog? I'm looking to adopt a dog between 3-5 years old, one who is active, energetic and good with cats. Sort of new to town and don't know...

I found my bestfriend at the Westside Animal Shelter. Best $40 I've ever spent.

I have had great luck with the place in Cornonado Mall, I believe they are an outreach of the city's program, but tend to have better taken care of animals.

I've adopted 3 dogs through Luvin' Labs Labrador rescue. Great rescue and people.

The animal humane society. Just Google map it. There are two locations.

I adopted from NM Animal Friends. They show their dogs often at a Petco on Wyoming and Academy. They are very nice and give you a grace period of when you can return the dog if it's not working out. link: http://www.nmaf.org/

We adopted our dog from [Lap Dog Rescue of NM](https://www.facebook.com/LDRNM/?fref=ts) in July. They have small- to medium-sized dogs of all different ages and they are fostered in homes, so you get a lot of helpful, accurate information about the dog's personality beforehand. I had a great experience with them and highly recommend!

There are a lot of good places but I have to speak up against one of them. I had a bad experience with enchantmutts in Albuquerque. They are super particular about their adoptions. You pretty much have to have a huge house and several acres or a fenced yard or they won't even look at you. And judging by their Facebook pics, they seem biased towards older couples. But good luck! There are tons of awesome dogs out there.

I currently foster for nmdog, and have an active little white pitbull. Check them out!

I would happily recommend [Almost Home NM](http://www.almosthomenm.com/) it's a smaller operation that pulls dogs that ran out of time at kill shelters.

I know I'm late to the game, but for anyone else interested... If you don't mind a small drive, I suggest the Valencia County Animal Shelter in Los Lunas. I volunteer there when I can find time and the shelter is so overcrowded. (Side rant: Valencia County has some of the most irresponsible animal owners I have ever seen, but that is a whole other issue...) There are tons of amazing dogs there that are in desperate need of a forever home. It would be awesome if more people could make that happen!
